WRECKDIVING
El Minya a wreck located ten minutes from the center of Hurghada right next to the harbour.
Depth: between 17 and 32 m
Conditions: occasionally strong current and restricted sight, because of the neighborhood to the port. The depth and the wreck require some dive experience.
Overview: the Egyptian minesweeper was sunk by Israeli warplanes in 1970. Now it is lying on the beam on the East of the port. The bow about 25 m deep and the stem bout 32 m.
Dive plan: the dive is going to be more interesting if you get some information about the dramatical historical backround of the wreck before you go. The current might be really strong so better control your air very often. The upper part of the wreck is about 17 m deep, next to the whole of the bomb which sunk the boat. The wreck seduces to enter it. Just be careful because of metall pieces and sharp edges. The anchor on the starboard side is still at its place. The ship sheathing is perforated by bullet holes caused by the machine gun of the warplane. At the stem you will find the rudder and propeller intact. The deck is fitted with winches and pulleys. A torpedo similar mine cleaning device seems to be ready for use. Look through portholes to see the bridge and the cabine of the radio operator. There is still sharp ammunition. So better do not touch anything.
What to see: big and close schools of glasfish found a home here. Firefish and mackerel fight over their prey. Next to the bow you will find amazing red sponges and pyjama chromodoris.
In the direct neighbourhood of El Minya is another wreck I do not know the name of. It is a home for schools of fish and their hunters. We still have enough air so we are able to dive it too.
For me it was a great experience even if I was really scared entering the dark tunnel of the wreck. But with a little help and guidance from a good divemaster and guide I made it.
Thanks to Sultan who trusted me so I did it.
